This festival is the Jewish New Year, when G-d decides what will happen in the year ahead. The synagogue services are held over two days and include the blowing of the shofar, a ram’s horn trumpet.
The festival is held over two days because it occurs on the first day of the month. In biblical times a new month was signified by the first sightings of the new moon. As this occurs at different times throughout the world the festival is celebrated over two days and not one.
This is a time of judgement when we believe believe G-d balances a person’s good deeds over the last year against their bad deeds and decides their fate accordingly.
The 10 days between Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur are known as the Days Of Awe when we make amends to those we have wronged over the previous year.
