The story of Chanukah tells the “miracle of the oil”. In 164 BC the Maccabees recaptured Jerusalem from the occupying Syrian Greeks. When they came to rededicate the temple, they had only enough sacred oil to light the menorah for one day. The candles stayed lit for eight days despite this. During the eight days of Chanukah we light candles on a hannukiah, a nine branched candelabra, which symbolises how G-d looked after us at that time. This is why the festival is often called ‘The Festival of Lights’.
At Catford we hold communal menorah lightings. It is traditional to eat fried foods so doughnuts abound.
