As ever, Chanukah has been marked by a series of events that has generated tremendous community involvement.
The first candle was lit on a Sunday which presented an opportunity to organise an event that was attractive to all ages. Our cheder entertained us with a rap that had been specially written for the occasion. This was followed by a hilarious musical singalong, and a 45 minute performance by a Magic Circle magician who mystified us all. Chanukah brachot were sung and the first candle was lit.
We were invited by Lewisham Borough Council to light the second candle at the Civic Centre. The Mayor of Lewisham, Brenda Dacres OBE, welcomed us and she spoke of the importance the Council places on integration in Lewisham. It gave us the opportunity to share the joy of Chanukah with members of other faiths and a good many Lewisham Councillors.
Lightings continued on the remaining days in members homes, but the grand finale came on the eighth day. A gathering of 40 were welcomed into a members home. Their chanukiot were grouped together and once lit, they resembled an inferno. The evening was rounded off with plenty of doughnuts which did not help anyone on a diet.
Plans for Purim are already in hand.
